QMX thumping issues on CW
Просмотров 1,3 тыс.3 месяца назад
Running firmware 1.00.017, here is how the QMX sounds on CW 20-80m. The only change to settings I've made are to make the sidetone volume relative to AF gain (not absolute, as is the default). The thumping that you hear remains the same at all power levels, from 2 watts out to 6 watts out and is roughly the same with headphones as with the powered speaker used here.

Crystal River FL - a drone's eye view
Просмотров 3625 месяцев назад
Manatee season in Florida is roughly November to March as numerous springs and rivers provide a winter home for them. Crystal River provides an excellent opportunity to see them in clear waters - from a kayak, as a swimmer or, least obtrusively of all, from a drone.

No radio in this video although I did activate the park after the kayak outting. The Crystal River area of Florida bills itself as "The Manatee Capital of the World" and I believe it.

KX2 & small whip - more DX than domestic contacts!

The KH1 had me wondering how quickly I could set up a POTA operation with my KX2...and how effective it might be with such a small antenna. The results of this POTA activation did not disappoint!
KX2 POTA DX

I was pleasantly surprised on my first outting with my new KX2 - surprised at the amount (and strength) of DX that would be calling me. After a few W/VE stations, all the callers were in Europe. 10 watts and a whip antenna. I love me some CW!

Impressive scenery extremely well edited and that KX2 was certainly working for you. Just a great video.
Yes, the KX2 was perfect for the task - enough power, yet compact. 73
What is that small green-faced device on top of your LDG tuner? What is it used for?
It's a memory keyer
Do you have AGC enabled? Also, firmware version 19 came out recently and has an option to turn off thumping.
Yes, shortly after this video FW .019 fixed the problem.
Great video John with fantastic scenery. Many thanks for the POTA park as well, pleased to have heard you! 73 de Jon G4IVV
Thanks for the contact, Jon - and for being part of the video! 73
Great scenery and fantastic views, and drone shots are spectacular ! I did about the same trip in 2016 following the Ringway 1 around the island....once in a lifetime experience ! Thanks for sharing John.....73 de ON4CDJ Patrick

Can this weld 2mm pure nickel strip..i have the awithz spot welder and it struggles with it
6:20 <-- THIS is gold to refresh our brains after a while
i own one of these, i got mine with software that did not support 11m but now its working, i just needed to find an older software version :) im now teærying to figure it all out for the CW, the beste BW and Filters.. i need the Decoder to work as good as it can. 73 from LA-M160560
Now I am even more excited to receive my QMX in the mail next week! I'm curious though why there's an option to turn off the thump suppression.
Does the input impedance of the meter on the audio leads matter?
Vector Net Work Analyser is the proper tool. Cost from 47€ to 259€ in a span from 100kHz at the low end and 900MHz for the cheap to over 4GHz for the more costly one. The measure bridge is built in and the dynamic range is up to 90dB. You can also do a lot more stuff with a VNWA
"Toy factor" and other specs are all relative
you wont get 90dB range on S11 measurements with any VNA !
My best VNWA ranges extrem frequency from 10 Hz to 300 MHz and is limited only by 1/f noise in the lF range and by 120dB dynamic range in HF and up range
@@__logan__duvalier__ you are ignorant
@@bussi7859 The directivity of the S11 test set will reduce S11 measurement range to well below the S21 dynamic range of 120dB. Even the best VNAs wont achieve 50dB
This bridge is useful up to 1500MHz, above that it is crap. The alternative is to use a VNWA, that 50€ up to 1000MHz, for 250€ up to 4GHz. With the VNWA you can do a ton more type of measurements and a lot more accurate.this is a toy
With a Rhode and Schwatrz network analyzer you can make these measurements well into the double digit GHz range. To the R&S, your VNWA is a toy.
Sweet! Now to update mine! Thanks for the video, John. 72, John
I received my FX-4CR last week. I also purchased the cooling system. Prior to installing the cooling system the radio did get hot after about an hour on FT8. After installing the cooling system the radio ran much cooler. Still getting warm. Getting very warm after 4 hours of FT8 10w. I also plan on installing small heat sync on top. My Bluetooth window is installed on the bottom of my radio.
I'm surprised the Icom case "allowed" the Yaesu inside... You had a pileup from the git go, that's an awesome set up.
Yep, the sacrilege!
Neat video.....Nice Beam'er. Barry, KU3X
It's always interesting to hear your side of the QSO. I really dropped out there at the end. Great video, thanks for taking us along and being out there activating!
Great video. What's the link to the antenna? 😉
I've added links to the description 73
Looks like that antenna worked very well for you! Thanks for bringing us along! Now I am craving fish! 73, Patrick KF4LMZ
40m wasn't so hot but I started a bit late. I'll have to give it another go on 40m. 73
I would how some people would do back in old days of cw when you had to have a sounder
That humping reminds me of a cw sounder
No tape? No film either! 😜
Considering the entire unit is a heat-sink, hot might be good in this case.
The purpose of a heart sink is to remove heat from electronic components, not encapsulate them within it.
@@AE5X I’m just thinking like a MacBook. Ppl raise concerns that they are hotter to the touch, than other laptops. That’s because its chassis is a way more efficient heat-sink than others (solid aluminum). I’m curious if this also the case (pun intended) here. Because I’m definitely thinking to snag one of these :)
Never really noticed on mine.
10fm is amazing isnt it ✌🏻🇺🇸
Glad to have gotten you in the log in Vicksburg!
Thanks for the contact!
Cool

My thumping seems to be about the same on all bands. I am using an amplified speaker (a ball sized one slightly smaller than a tennis ball). What AGC setting seems to help? I think for CW I could easily use no AGC because the band noise is not amplified with no signal (and less fatiguing) but a signal seems to pop out of the noise better.
I have the high band - same issue, but different affected bands. Glad to see it’s not just me! Fingers crossed Hans can figure it out. He’s a wizard.
Why aren't the fans in your FT 891 coming on when operating at a 100 watts CW in 60+ degree weather? The fans in my 891 would be screaming. Thanks de Michael, DL2AKV
They do come on frequently, and usually stay on, if I'm operating from within a vehicle. They were probably right at the threshold during this operation. 73
It is a real shame. I only ever get good audio reports when the signal strength is lower. I now only use mine for FT8.
I could not find the link to the memory keyer in the description.
Added, thanks
@@AE5Xthanks looks good.
I can hear what you are talking about. I have this radio but haven’t had a chance to try it yet. 40m is my favorite band with 20m and 30m being my next favorites. I doubt this issue will be a problem for me as such. I’ll be interested to see if this problem can be resolved. Great job on the video…72!
I'm not sure if each QMX displays the same behavior on the same bands. 80m seems to be commonly affected but others report significant thumping on 60 and 40 - I don't have a problem there. I have tried a few AGC setting that were suggested - they don't seem to make much difference. AGC settings in this rig are infinitely configurable - may too much! I'm lucky in that the most affected band on my QMX is a band I never use. Good luck and 72, John
I thought about getting the FX-4CR but guessed that a 98 degree Central Florida day will cause the rig to overheat. At QRP levels it probably is fine. I think I'll save my money, but I appreciate your thorough demonstration of the rig in actual use. 73! - K4NYM
This video is meant to support a blog posting here: ae5x.blogspot.com/2024/03/uhsdr-aligned-where-does-mchf-clone.html
Where did you purchase this radio?
From this eBay seller: www.ebay.com/str/xspar I'm not endorsing or vouching for him, however - I don't know how his other products are, including other mcHF clones...
60m and 40m i could just about live with, as for 80m 30m and 20m thats a different story. Love your 9A5N key, very very nice. Best 73.
I'm starting CW, and your level makes me envious, that and the rig hahaha good stuff, thanks for the video!
For context: ae5x.blogspot.com/2024/03/mchf-clone-right-out-of-box.html
I have had my eye on those for a while. I have been a little skeptical of the clones. Hope to see more on the mcHF clone from you!
I was trying to find one of the original Mchf, but its not continued, you cant get these kits anymore, but the Chinese ones are as close to the real deal thats its ok to buy, the software updates are supported, and you can get kits to put inside lika a Atu :) mine works very well, and with up to 15 watts output, its a nice Qrp radio.
Nice
So I love the Belka and 705 from what I have seen in videos. Question, can the 705 pick up all the stations that the Belka can? I will buy them both eventually but will get the 705 first if indeed it has all the capability. Thanks in advance for your response.
I also had trouble with my 17 foot whip on 20 meters portable. I use a trailer hitch mount. No radials needed on 17 and up for good SWR but I needed to add a few radials for 20. I use short radials only about 11 or 12 feet. I find it not critical as long as I have 3 minimum to provide a low enough capacitive reactance ( low impedance) coupling to the ground. I don’t seem to need much when I just use my Hustler mobile antenna to get a low SWR but bandwidth suffers.
The underlying formula is f = 1/(2π*(L*C)^(1/2)), where f = frequency, L = inductance, C = capacitance. Please mind, that the values are given in Hz, H, and F. So you must adjust for M, µ and p.
Rearranged for the unknown value of L and corrected for scientific notation, the Excel (or Google Sheets) formula is "=(((1/(6.28*K24))^2)/K25)*10^6" where K24 is the frequency in MHz and K25 is the capacitor value in pF. The 10^6 converts Henries into uH. (For those unfamiliar with formulas, the K is the column and the 24 and 25 are the rows.)

Amazing sunrise and live oaks! AND you got to play radio to boot! Enjoyed it! 73, KF4LMZ
Not a bad way to spend a winter day! 73
It's a beautiful spot alright. I really enjoyed the drone footage as well. We just had three inches of snow here in southwestern Missouri, so my drone is grounded. I wanted to activate a park today, but I think it's not a good day to be out and about. I think I asked about your paddles before, but I have forgotten. Who made them? 72 de AG7TX
They are Palm Pico paddles, no longer available new. I've heard that drones will take off and land on snow but I'll never know from experience... ;-)
@@AE5X Oh yeah, those are rare as hen's teeth. Thanks!
Have you upgraded to the latest firmware? I've heard it cleans up a lot of the CW issues.
I no longer have the radio.
